Skip the Hotel Routine: Here’s How We’d Spend a Romantic Fall Weekend Near Yosemite
Good food, beautiful drives, a little adventure, and enough time to actually slow down.
There’s something about fall in the Sierra Nevada that makes us want to slow things down a little.
The mornings are crisp. The afternoons are comfortable enough to spend outside. The light changes. The crowds of peak summer begin to thin. And after a day outside, coming home to a drink and nowhere else you absolutely have to be sounds pretty damn good.
So if the two of us were planning a romantic fall weekend near Yosemite, we wouldn’t try to cram every overlook, trail and restaurant into 48 hours.
We’d leave some room for the weekend to actually feel like a weekend.
Here’s how we’d do it.
Friday: Get Here, Put Your Bags Down and Stop Driving
If you can, arrive while there’s still some daylight left. The drive into the Sierra is part of the experience, particularly as the seasons begin to change.
Once you get to Oakhurst, though, we wouldn't immediately send you back out with an itinerary and a list of things you're supposed to accomplish.
Check in. Put your bags down. Have a look at the mountains. Change out of whatever you've been driving in.
Then decide how ambitious you actually feel.
If you're ready for a proper night out, Oakhurst has some great places for dinner, and we've put our favorites together in our Local Favorites guide.
But if the drive was enough adventure for one day, that's okay too.
At Mountain Daddies, drinks are available here at the B&B, and on weekends we offer a small menu of light meals. Have something to eat, order a cocktail or open a bottle of wine, and call it a night.
You're allowed to be on vacation.
Saturday Morning: Breakfast First. Obviously.
We're biased about this part.
One of the pleasures of staying at a bed and breakfast is waking up and not immediately having to figure out where you're going to eat.
Have breakfast. Drink your coffee. Take your time.
Then put on some decent shoes, because fall is one of our favorite times to get outside around here.
Go Earn Dinner
For a lot of people, romance means candles and champagne.
We like those things too.
But a beautiful hike on a crisp fall morning with your favorite person is pretty hard to beat.
The cooler temperatures can make autumn a wonderful time for exploring the trails around Oakhurst and the Sierra Nevada. And you don't necessarily have to commit your entire day to a major Yosemite expedition to get outside.
There are local hikes and adventures ranging from relatively easy outings to the kind that will make that evening cocktail feel thoroughly deserved.
We've already collected some of our favorites in the Adventure section of our Local Favorites guide, so rather than duplicate that list here, start there and choose something that fits the two of you.
And remember: this is supposed to be a romantic weekend, not an audition for Survivor.
Choose the hike you'll both enjoy.

Or Make Saturday Your Yosemite Day
Of course, Yosemite is right there.
If this is your first trip—or you haven't visited in fall before—Saturday can absolutely be your park day.
The trick is not trying to see all of Yosemite before dinner.
Pick the part of the park that matters most to you. Take the beautiful drive. Stop when something catches your eye. Go for a walk. Take too many pictures. Sit somewhere for a while.
You don't get bonus points for visiting the greatest number of landmarks.
From Oakhurst, the South Entrance brings you into the Wawona and Mariposa Grove side of Yosemite, while Yosemite Valley is considerably farther into the park. If you're still figuring out how to plan your Yosemite time, we've put together guides to Yosemite National Park and staying near Yosemite's South Entrance that can help.
Fall also requires a little more flexibility than summer. Days are getting shorter, temperatures can vary considerably between elevations, seasonal operations begin changing, and mountain weather can change quickly. Our Seasonal Yosemite Trips guide can help you plan for what autumn brings.
Check current Yosemite conditions before you leave and build your day around what Mother Nature is actually doing—not what your itinerary said three weeks ago.

Don't Ignore What's Outside the Park
One of the reasons we love this part of the Sierra is that Yosemite doesn't have to occupy every minute of your trip.
Spend part of the afternoon exploring Oakhurst. Take a scenic drive. Visit one of the wineries in the area. Wander through the foothills. Stop somewhere simply because it looks interesting. Our Local Favorites wine guide is a good place to start.
Bass Lake takes on a different personality once summer winds down, too. The busy boating-and-swimming season gives way to something quieter. Just remember that businesses and recreation around the lake can be seasonal, so check what's open before building your day around a particular stop.
Sometimes the best part of a weekend is the thing you hadn't scheduled.
Saturday Night: Go Out for Date Night. Or Don't.
After hiking around the Sierra or spending the day in Yosemite, you've earned dinner.
If you're ready to go out, this is the night we'd make a reservation somewhere good. Our Local Favorites guide has our picks for restaurants, wineries and other places around Oakhurst that we actually recommend.
But here's another perfectly acceptable romantic evening:
Come home.
Take a shower.
Put on something comfortable.
Have a cocktail.
Eat something here.
Sit together and talk about the day.
On weekends, we offer light meals at Mountain Daddies, and our bar is available for guests who'd rather have a drink here than get back in the car.
A romantic getaway doesn't have to mean having a reservation every four hours.
Sometimes not having anywhere else to be is the luxury.

Sunday Morning: Don't Ruin It by Rushing
Sleep in a little.
Come down for breakfast.
Have another cup of coffee.
If the weather is beautiful and you aren't in a hurry to get home, take one more short drive or walk before leaving. Maybe explore somewhere you passed on Saturday. Maybe make a quick stop around Bass Lake. Maybe do absolutely nothing.
We support that option too.
The Sierra will still be here next time.

Why We Love Fall Here
Summer gets most of the attention around Yosemite, but fall has its own personality.
Cooler mornings make hiking more appealing. The landscape begins changing. Roads and trails can feel different without the intensity of peak summer. Evenings invite you to come inside a little earlier and settle in.
But fall in the mountains also means paying attention.
Daylight disappears earlier. Temperatures can change dramatically between Oakhurst and higher elevations. Some businesses reduce their hours or close for the season. Yosemite roads, trails and facilities can be affected by weather as autumn progresses.
That's not a reason to avoid fall.
It's a reason not to over-plan it.
Give yourself enough flexibility to wake up, look outside, check the conditions and decide what sounds good.

So What Makes a Romantic Weekend Near Yosemite?
We don't think it's rose petals arranged in the shape of a heart.
It's waking up somewhere beautiful without an alarm.
It's breakfast you didn't have to make.
It's cold air on a hike and somebody you actually want to walk beside.
It's taking the long way because the view is better.
It's finding somewhere great for dinner—or deciding you're perfectly happy staying in.
It's a cocktail at the end of a day outside.
And most importantly, it's leaving enough empty space in the weekend to enjoy the person you came here with.
That's how we'd do it.
